The Attention Trap · Lesson 9/10
Why Willpower Fails
Why stopping is harder when the easiest action is always to continue.

People often say:
“Just stop scrolling.”
But stopping is not as simple as it sounds.
Inside many apps, continuing is the easiest action.
Swipe again.
Watch the next video.
Tap the next post.
Refresh one more time.
Stopping is harder.
You have to notice what is happening.
Remember what you planned.
Decide to leave.
Resist the next reward.
Close the app.
That is a lot of work.
Especially when you are tired, stressed, bored, or avoiding something uncomfortable.
This is why willpower often fails. Not because people are weak. But because the design is asymmetric.
Continuing is frictionless.
Stopping requires effort.
So the real solution is not only “be stronger.”
A better solution is:
Make stopping easier.
Make unconscious opening harder.
Add a pause before the loop begins.
Self-check
When you fail to stop, ask:
Was I weak — or was continuing simply the easiest path?
