The Attention Trap · Lesson 7/10
Social Rewards Are Unpredictable
Why likes, replies, views, and messages can be so hard to ignore.

Some app rewards are not just entertaining.
They are social.
A reply.
A like.
A comment.
A view.
A message.
Someone noticing you.
These small signals can feel surprisingly powerful because they are connected to belonging.
We all want to know:
Did someone respond?
Did they like it?
Did they see me?
Am I included?
The tricky part is that social rewards are unpredictable.
Sometimes nothing happens.
Sometimes someone replies.
Sometimes a post gets attention.
Sometimes a message arrives at exactly the right moment.
So we check again.
Not always because the app is fun. Sometimes because we are waiting to be seen.
Social apps are emotionally stronger than simple entertainment apps.
They do not only show content. They connect to our need for other people.
Self-check
When you check an app, ask:
Am I looking for content — or am I looking for a social signal?
