The Attention Trap · Lesson 2/10
The Reward Is Not the Video — It’s the “Maybe”
Why uncertainty keeps us checking, refreshing, and scrolling.

Most of the time, opening an app gives us nothing special.
No important message.
No amazing video.
No useful update.
No life-changing post.
But sometimes, there is something.
A reply.
A like.
A funny video.
A message you were waiting for.
A post that feels strangely perfect for your mood.
And that sometimes is the trap.
If every scroll were boring, we would stop. If every scroll were amazing, it would become predictable.
But because the reward is uncertain, we keep checking.
That is why refreshing an app can feel a little like pulling a slot machine.
You are not always enjoying what you see. You are checking whether the next thing might be better.
Open app.
Check.
Maybe reward.
Repeat.
The reward is not always the video. The reward is the possibility.
That small “maybe” is powerful because it keeps the loop alive even when most of the content is forgettable.
Self-check
Next time you open a distracting app, ask:
Am I looking for something specific — or am I checking what might be there?
